OSHA directive announcement on 12/15/2010 regarding Fall Protection. Effective 6/16/2011, contractors must comply with the new standard. OSHA announced they will begin enforcement after this date. OSHA rescinded a temporary 1995 directive that allowed residential construction firms to routinely bypass conventional fall protection for their employees working at heights of six feet and above.
OSHA Secretary, Dr. David Michaels, said the change addresses a lingering problem. "Fatalities from falls are the number one cause of workplace deaths in construction," he stated. "We cannot tolerate workers getting killed in residential construction when effective means are readily available to prevent those deaths."
Update on OSHA Fall Protection Directive; On 6/9/2011 OSHA announced a 3 month phase in period for contractors to comply with the new Fall Protection Standard. They state that contractors may continue to use their old written fall protection plan and methods and have until 9/15/2011 to implement the new standards. In the event you do not have any fall protection written plans or standards in place you are in violation of the first OSHA Fall Protection requirements. It is likely you will be fined if caught by an OSHA inspector.
